Darning Stitch In Hand Embroidery Stitches Tutorial (Step By Step & Video)

September 11, 2019 By fasembroidery Leave a Comment

Darning Stitch is a simple stitch which involves a series of straight stitches. It is generally used to mend torn clothes and helps rebuild the fabric. You can also use this stitch to form interesting patterns that you can incorporate into any embroidery design.

What you will need?

  • Any fabric.
  • Embroidery hoop, 15cm (6″) (Bigger if you are working on a larger design) ( You can purchase a set of 6 hoops from Amazon for your basic needs.)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Embroidery thread (You can buy this pack of 36 shades of the DMC embroidery floss.)

How many strands of floss do you need for making the Darning Stitch?

You can use all 6 strands of the floss. But if you are working on a finer design, then start with 2 strands of floss and increase the number of strands according to your design. I have used all 6 strands for making this stitch.

Step by Step Pictorial Process of making the Darning Stitch

starting the stitch on white fabric

1. Bring the thread up at point A. Insert the needle at point B. Without taking the needle down, insert at point C. Bring the thread up. You will notice that a straight stitch would have formed. Again, insert from point D to Point E. Note that point E is below and wider than point C.

2. Again, take down the needle from point F to point G.

3. Continue working in a similar fashion for the rest of the pattern.

Tips for working the Darning Stitch

  1. Knowing the straight stitch will help to work this stitch easily.
  2. You can also take down the stitch before bringing up the thread at next point.
  3. This can also be made in a series of running stitch.

What is this stitch used for?
