Double Feather Stitch, How to work in Hand Embroidery (Step By Step)

February 1, 2019 By fasembroidery 2 Comments

Double Feather Stitch is a variation of the feather stitch. It works great for the stems, branches, vines and the like. It is also known as the double coral stitch.

It follows the same technique as the feather stitch but two more stitches are worked consequently before the angle of the stitches change. The double feather stitch has a zigzag effect on the design.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED?

  • Any fabric.
  • Embroidery hoop, 15cm (6″) (Bigger if you are working on a larger design)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Embroidery thread

How many strands of floss do you need for making the double feather stitch?

I have taken all the six strands of floss. You can start with 2 strands of floss and increase the number of strands according to your design. The lesser the strands, the finer the design will be, but generally, 6 strands will work for most of the designs.

Step by Step Pictorial Process of making the double feather stitch.

1. Start by bringing the needle up from beneath the fabric at point A. Insert at Point B and bring it up again at point C, that is diagonal to point A and Point B.

2. Pull the thread at line no. 4. This is almost identical to making the Fly Stitch.

3. Again insert the needle at point D on line no. 2. Bring the needle up at point E on line no.3.

4. With the thread below the needle, bring the needle up.

5. Again, insert the needle at point F and bring it up at point G like shown above.

6. One set of double feather stitches are completed and now we will work similarly on the other side now.

7. Continue making similar stitches till the end of your pattern.

8. Finally, take down the needle from outside the stitch and secure with a knot to end the pattern.

Tips for working the double feather stitch

  • Start from the middle of the lines and work towards either right or left.
  • Do not pull the thread too tightly as you will end up with creases.
  • I have shown the above tutorial with lines. As you get the hang of this stitch, it is preferable to use without the lines as it is not possible to hide the lines in this stitch.

WHAT IS THIS DOUBLE CORAL STITCH USED FOR?

  • Vines, branches can all be made with this amazing stitch.
  • You can even make stems and stitch buds along the corners to make a beautiful design.

More stitches:

  • Bullion Knot
  • Long and Short Stitch
  • Trellis Stitch
  • Blanket stitch
  • satin stitch
  • back stitch
  • stem stitch
