Split Back Stitch is another way of making the split stitch in back stitch. It is a very beautiful stitch that looks really elegant and pretty when stitched.
What is the difference between the split stitch and split back stitch?
There is a very minute difference between the two stitches. It is just the way the needle is worked that makes the difference. The split back stitch is flatter on the fabric than the split stitch.
But you will be forgiven if you call both the stitches as same.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED?
- Any fabric.
- Embroidery hoop, 15cm (6″) (Bigger if you are working on a larger design)
- Tapestry needle
- Embroidery thread
HOW MANY STRANDS OF FLOSS SHOULD I USE FOR MAKING THE SPLIT BACK STITCH?
It is preferable to use a single strand of floss and tie the knot together at the end of both the threads. It works great with woolen and silk threads.
Step by Step Pictorial Process of making the Split Back Stitch
1. Start by inserting the needle at point A.
2. Pull the thread up and take the needle down at desired length at point B.
3. Pull the thread down to make a straight stitch.
4. Work like the back stitch. Bring the needle up at point C.
5. Pull the thread up and insert the needle again at point C right in between the strands.
6. Take the needle down. Now you have worked a split back stitch.
7. Continue working in a similar fashion.
Here is one example of how I have used it in an embroidery design.
TIPS FOR WORKING THE STITCH
- While working on the split, try to insert the needle between the two strands.
- It’s best to use a single strand of thread and tie both the ends of the thread together.
WHAT IS THIS STITCH USED FOR?
- This stitch is just perfect for stems, curved lines etc.
- Silk thread or wool can be used for this stitch.
- You can also fill in any design with this split back stitch.
- Chain stitch can be replaced with this stitch.
