Barb stitch is part of the blanket stitch family. It is a decorative stitch. This stitch used two blanket stitches which are mirrored to one another and later a contrasting thread is used to couch around the stem of the blanket stitches.
What you will need?
- Any fabric.
- Embroidery hoop, 15cm (6″) (Bigger if you are working on a larger design) ( You can purchase a set of 6 hoops from Amazon for your basic needs.)
- Tapestry needle
- Embroidery thread (You can buy this pack of 36 shades of the DMC embroidery floss.)
How many strands of floss do you need for making the Barb Stitch?
You can use all 6 strands of the floss. But if you are working on a finer design, then start with 2 strands of floss and increase the number of strands according to your design. I have used all 6 strands for making this stitch.
Step by Step Pictorial Process of making the Barb Stitch
1. Start by bringing the stitch up at point A. Take it in through point B and then out through point C. Now, instead of just pulling the thread around like the blanket stitch, wrap it around the needle from right to left, as shown in the picture above.
2. Pull the thread gently to form a knot at the top. Continue working in a similar fashion for the rest of the pattern.
